May 14 saw the Panthers host recently promoted St Kevin’s Old Boys in a huge day for the club. Expectations were high for the day which commemorates the passing of two legends of the competing clubs – Andrew McHarg and Mark McKaige – in a battle for the trophy named after the two champions. Beautiful weather and a sell-out lunch set the tone for the day.
SKOB’s went on a huge recruiting drive in the off season and were able to field close to its best side for the season so far, and the gulf in talent was evident early despite our best start to the season. Eight goals to two in the first quarter quickly became 15 goals to four at half-time.
The boys continued to battle hard and again could have curled up their toes, but went about restoring some pride in the second half. A much-improved effort and some positional changes saw us score five goals in each of the third and last quarters, which led to us recording our highest score for the year. Unfortunately we also conceded our highest score for the year, which was disappointing. The final score was SKOB’s 31.18 (204) to 14.7 (91).
We take the positives, learn from the areas we need to keep improving on and back up for a better effort this week against De La Salle.
