Election Day was upon us as we travelled to St Kevin’s College to take on SKOB’s in a must-win game for them to keep their top 4 hopes alive. It was a big day for their club as it was Foundation Day celebration with Past Players congregating to see their beloved Old Boys take on this year’s cellar-dwellers.
The Panthers had been building the last two weeks so we were waiting to see if we could continue our upward trend. We had five changes forced upon us with injury and the travel bug striking. We played our 41st player this season as a result and our 15th debutant in Jeremy Cator – captain of last year’s victorious U19’s premiership side.
The first quarter gave an indication that the Panthers were continuing the form trend of the last few weeks with an excellent start against the breeze to go in at quarter-time with a six point advantage. Vice Captain Joel Rice was in everything and Andrew Sloan was a great target up forward.
The second quarter continued where we left off and we got out to a three goal lead halfway through. SKOB’s were not to be denied however, and hit back strongly to hit the front late in the quarter. A late goal by Joel Rice regained the lead for us and we went in to half-time with a three-point lead.
We challenged the boys to not let this opportunity slip. They could sense something special was evolving. We went goal for goal with SKOB’s in the third quarter, getting headed on four occasions. Ben Smithwick played a quarter of football for the ages to lead from the front and we went in at three-quarter time one point up.
Again we challenged the boys to take the game on and not die wondering. A huge battle ensued in the last quarter with both sides refusing to yield. SKOB’s had the ball in their forward line for what seemed an eternity. Our back six stood tall with Michael Thompson, Luke Crozier and Tim Smith in particular being superb.
We went down the other end after SKOB’s peppered the goals and with 40 seconds remaining, Cam Wallace kicked a miraculous goal from the boundary to give us a nine point lead. SKOB’s immediately went down their end and scored, leaving us with 10 seconds to defend our three point lead, which we did.
WATCH THE BOYS SING THE CLUB SONG IN THE ROOMS
An incredible game saw us with our first win of the year. Our leaders in Cam Jones, Joel Rice, Ben Smithwick, Jacob Murphy and Sam Cust were inspirational all day.
Taz and I were so happy for the players and supporters to finally get some reward for effort. Final score Panthers 12.12 (84) to SKOB’s 11.15 (81).
We have a bye now and cannot wait for the next game v St Bernard’s.
