Buoyed by some promising signs in round 1, the reserves team were looking forward to another chance to show some improvement over four quarters. It was a very different looking reserves team to the week before, with up to eight changes for various reasons. Regardless, by the time of the bounce we were ready to go up against the Grand Finalists from last years’ Premier Reserve competition.

The first quarter, in particular the first 10 minutes, was fantastic. The effort and intensity shown by the group, in the form of tackling, smothering, chasing and hardness at the footy, set a new level for this reserves group. The Uni Blues opposition seemed to be rushed when we applied this pressure, and we were able to generate a few turnovers and quick ball movement that led to opportunities that our forwards converted. We relinquished a late goal after the siren which hurt our momentum, but we were still definitely in the game.

In the second quarter we were able to maintain the intensity and effort, but it was just some poor decision making and disposal that led to us coughing up some easy goals. We didn’t stick to our structures as much as we should have, and this has the biggest scope for improvement for us moving forward. That said, the scoreboard at half-time didn’t reflect the output that our group was displaying.

There isn’t much to expand on in the second-half, we fell away badly and conceded some easy goals as our inexperienced playing group were out-shone by a quality opposition outfit. Their height, bigger bodies around the contest and experience at A-grade level (both reserve and senior) ultimately gave them a resounding victory.

That said, I still cannot question the effort and intensity of the majority of the playing group from the weekend. Sometimes you come up against a better opposition, but it was good for our 22 from the weekend to see the level that is required for success in Premier Reserve.

Individually, there were super contributions from Mitch Nixon, Spencer Cambridge, Rhett Mitchelhill, Henry McQueen, Robbie O’Hern and Lewis Fotheringham, all of whom played critical roles throughout the day for us.  We look forward to next week to be able to put the weekends’ efforts behind us and improve again against Old Melbournians.
