The VAFA system requires us to nominate our six best players each week. In many ways I would like to nominate the whole squad who pushed themselves through all sorts of barriers to make University Blues earn every one of their 29 goals.
Yet again – as well as coping with the holiday season – we had to absorb another unprecedented crop of injuries. To make things worse one of our real warriors, Sammy Comley, was pulled out of the game in the second term with concussion, and the indomitable Sam Hassett fought through the second half bandaged up like a mummy when he probably should have been off as well.
Many of the guys who ran on to Dunshea are not in a position to train. Half of the team had only had a game or two in Premier Reserve previously. Several had not met their teammates before Saturday. On paper University Blues should have won by 50 goals. That they scored little more than half that is due to the guts and determination of their Panther opponents.
Like everyone who saw the game on Saturday I was proud of the efforts of all our players.
Unfortunately I will miss the next two matches – but I leave the Ressies in the excellent hands of our Assistant Coach James Wagner.
Keep working guys.
