It's never easy to travel to Melbourne Uni in July, but with some experienced names back in the team, the reserves headed into the game confident of a better showing than previous weeks. Unfortunately that did not eventuate, not helped by two late withdrawals in the lead-up to the game, leaving us with only 20 players. This has made it incredibly hard for the group this year to be able to compete, as I cannot remember the last time we started a game with a full squad.
Uni Blacks ultimately were too strong and too good all over the ground, and played the challenging conditions a lot better. We have struggled to play to our adapting game-plan all season, which has also come about due to the changing nature of the squad. Every week we have upwards of four or five changes which makes consistency very difficult.
That said, it was great to see regular senior players Rhett Mitchelhill and Tim Smith back in the Carey jumper after a few weeks of holidays. Both players applied themselves well in defence under tough circumstances. Co-captain Henry McQueen provided a cool head down back with quality skills, and Harry Moore also provided some much needed run and carry. Well done also to Athol Candlish in his 50th game. With conditions very much suited to him, he tackled hard and was often on the bottom of the pack.
Special mention again to Michael Mazzocato who has been our most consistent and reliable player in recent weeks. Mazz returned from a mid-season holiday break, and also missed a few games at the beginning of the year through injury. Whilst only playing seven games for the season, he has been in the best players in five of those games and is improving further every week.
We go into the bye still winless unfortunately, but with three games to go there is still plenty to get out of the season. It's not just about this year, it’s about the future of the club and the reserves will continue to show pride in their effort.
