Saturday saw a moving ceremony involving Old Carey and Old Melburnians Seniors, Reserves and U19's along with Old Carey 3rd's and St Bede's/Mentone 3rds commemorating the ANZAC spirit. A trumpeter from Carey Grammar bugled the Last Post and a minute's silence followed. These times remind us that we are only playing a game of footy and that should always be remembered. Adding to the sombre moment was the backdrop of Patrick Cronin's tragic death and the tragic passing of one of Old Melburnian's player's (Al Armstrong) brother. Our thoughts are with the Armstrongs and Cronins in their hour of need. Patrick was a friend of quite a few of our players through their junior footballing days.

The game that ensued was a reminder to us at the Panthers that we have a long way to go to be competitive in games for long enough to be a threat to the opposition. We had a focus on our start which was better than previous weeks but once we drew level we relaxed again which has been a constant issue. OM's led 4.3 to 1.2 at quarter time.

The second quarter was also tight and the boys continued to battle manfully. Injuries to Julian Rowe and Aydan Hrovat didn't help our rotations but these things happen in footy and we must learn to cope and adapt accordingly. At half time we were still well in the game down 6.7 to 2.3. We had a number of chances in the second quarter to kick goals and didn't take them. At this level it hurts that all the hard work is not rewarded.

Further injury to Cam Wallace in the 3rd quarter didn't help and the big bodies of the OM's midfielders started to take its toll. Our back 6 battled really hard against the weight of possession that was mounting but never took a backward step. Michael Thompson had a role on George Hurley-Wellington - OM's leading goal kicker - and kept him goal-less which, under the circumstances, was a great effort. When Patty Cremean came off with a full body cramp, the dam wall broke open. OM's in front 10.13 to 3.6.

The last quarter was one of trying to stem the flood with no rotations on the bench. OM's ran out eventual winners 14.17 to 3.6. All our leaders on the park (Sam Cust, Joel Rice, Cam Jones and Jake Murphy) tried valiantly and vindicated their selections as leaders of this club. The leaders are also charged with keeping the group focussed on the little things that will keep us improving as a group.

The players never took a backward step or complained with their lot which is a great trait. Yes there were multiple injuries but, as said previously in this report, every team goes through this. We will not let our injury toll define us. How we respond as individuals, but more importantly as a team, will define us.  In further evidence that Generation Next is upon us, we blooded 3 more debutants. Mitch Nixon, who kicked a goal from playing in the backline, Spencer Cambridge and Marcus Cushen all handled themselves extremely well on the day. The future is bright at the Panthers despite the results thus far. 10 new players in 3 games gives us a sight at what to look forward to.
