The Reserves group have remained extremely strong and defiant this year, maintaining a team-first attitude and commitment in the face of some tough early-season results. Saturday against OM’s was another example of this. Having not kicked a goal for the first 3 quarters against stronger, more experienced opposition, we stuck at the contest and kicked three last-quarter goals. All in all, the second-half effort and intensity was a level (if not 2 or 3) above the first-half performance. Our first halves this year have put us behind the eight-ball in every game, and conceding an early lead has meant we’re chasing tail for the rest of the match. To be fair to the group, there were 9 changes to the line-up from the week before for various reasons, and that sort of change in personnel week-to-week is always going to make it hard to gain consistency no matter the talent of the group.

Despite the scoreboard at the end of the game, when you take into account that for the 3rd week in a row we were severely depleted in rotations for the majority of the game there are a number of positives to take from the weekend. Jack Harris played an outstanding game, willing his body to contest after contest and showing immense courage after missing a week from a severe facial injury from round 1. Lewis Fotheringham as skipper rucked pretty much the entire game, constantly giving our midfielders first use. Zac Lisle clunked everything that came his way at CHF, and provided us with a much-needed target forward of centre. Jeremy Cator, Paddy Arundel and Rob Cumming (first reserves game) all contributed huge efforts with their spoiling, tackling pressure and creativity when going forward.

We will bounce back. We are a much better team than we have shown on the scoreboard and in our efforts so far this year. We’ve shown in patches we are not only competitive, but we can play better football than our opposition. When we put together a more consistent effort over an entire match, we’ll reap the rewards.
