The reserves had their last game at home for season 2016 on Saturday, coming up against Collegians, with whom we had a close battle earlier in the year in one of our best performances. The group, bolstered by a full bench for the first time in many weeks, was looking forward to a strong outing.
Unfortunately in the first half we allowed our direct opponents too much space to work in, and they were able to run through the midfield under minimal pressure. This made it very tough for our defenders, as they were under constant pressure from repeat inside 50s. Down by 12 goals at half-time, we had plenty of work to do to take something from the game.
I'm very pleased to say that we were able to turn it around in the second half somewhat, despite still going down significantly on the scoreboard. As the group has all year, we played the game out strongly and as a group were rewarded for our consistent effort with eight scoring shots in the second half. This may not sound like much but considering we've struggled to get the ball inside 50 the last few weeks, this was significant improvement.
Our midfield lifted, led by Jeremy Cator, Bruno Consalvo, James King and Harry Moore. Harry kicked a fantastic goal from outside 50, showing his class and tenacity as it came after two or three efforts. Our second goal resulted from a fantastic chase-down tackle from Jez, which is quickly becoming his trademark. Bruno swooped on the ball and delivered smartly to Kingy who slotted it. Zac Lisle was marking everything and providing a solid target all over the ground, whilst skipper Henry Mcqueen-Miscamble, and under-19 Nick Pentney, were working hard down back to defend and start our attacking plays.
With one game to go, we have a number of players who have now played their final game for the year. These include Tristan Kelly, Dave Lescai and Matt Rupena, all former 3rd's players who stood up time and time again this year to help us field teams and avoid forfeiting, and as such deserve a lot of credit. Likewise, Rob Cumming has returned to footy this year and proved to be a critical team-man. Harry Moore has given his all every single week and, despite the scoreline, has never thrown in the towel.
Assistant coach James Wagner definitely didn't expect to play this many games in 2016, but has passed on his experience and knowledge to the young group in an on-field role down back. Lastly, Will Guiney has been one of our best players this year, often rucking for over 90% of the game and playing with injury most weeks.
Without these guys mentioned, we would have no doubt had to forfeit some games this season and the twos would not have had such a fighting spirit and tenacity this year. I hope all of these guys stay around the club and are part of the rebuild in the reserves in future years. We will be successful in the next few years and these players are a major part of that.
