We travelled to Mentone to play St-Bedes/Mentone for our first match in Division 2. Maybe we were still basking in the glory of our massive win last week expecting the goals to keep coming. We soon found that we were in a very tight match.
All credit to St-Bedes/Mentone, they out muscled us, worked harder to get their numbers to the ball and out positioned us around the ground forcing many turnovers through smart positioning which we honoured by kicking the ball straight to them.
Down by 2 goals at half time we needed to lift. The first challenge was to nullify our opponent’s use of the wind in the 3rd quarter which we did magnificently apart from a careless tackle late in the quarter which gifted them a goal on the 3 quarter time siren
Our effort in the last quarter was heroic. Relentless attack producing 3 great goals, 2 from our first gamers, one towering pack mark and long bomb from Meg Hermann and another great set shot by Kat Newton. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get us over the line falling short by one solitary point.
Some really solid learning opportunities from the game included positioning, greater disposal awareness, more care when tackling, taking our chances in front of goal and being switched on right from the start.
