Round 4 saw us travel down to Mentone to take on a rival of recent years in ST Bedes Mentone Tigers.
The first quarter was crucial for us as we had the wind but we needed to use the ball properly and not blaze away and waste the advantage. We were able to do this and kick away to and early lead before conceding a late goal to reduce our quarter time lead to 2 goals.
The second quarter was always going to be tough as they had the breeze that seemed to pick up during the break. To the boys credit they came out hard and matched and often beat their opponents in intensity and desire to win the football, even when outnumbered. We were able to keep them to just 1 goal during the term whilst scoring 1 ourselves. We went into the main break with a small lead but knew the hardest work was ahead of us.
The third quarter was another arm wrestle as both teams traded goals and opportunities were wasted by both sides. Our mids really took control in the quarter and were rarely beaten at the contest. As we drew close to the final break we were able to sneak a late goal to give us the momentum heading into the last quarter although they would have the wind in the final term.
The final quarter was good old fashioned footy as both teams crashed head to head in a tightly fought contest. They threw everything they could at us but our boys were up to the task even thought we were down a couple of rotations on the bench. The boys were able to hold off a physical st bedes to win a close game that can go on to set up our season.
A special thanks must go out to the members of the women's team that came to watch and help out after their game earlier in the day
