Before the match, the opposition coach was complaining to me about having averaged 6 changes per week to his side… we had 17 players in this week that did not play the previous week and were running out with our 87th player this season. But I said nothing because we were quietly excited about the inclusions this week. We felt we had a good mix of Panther Legends, a bit of the old rat pack and some up and coming stars of the future and to be honest, we were quietly confident after losing to Trinity by under 10 points a couple of weeks ago.
Sadly, our optimism turned to disappointment as we rolled out a very poor first half performance going into half time down by almost 100 points. 1.3-9 to 16.6-102
It was discussed at half time that we were going to look to our leaders for inspiration, until then it was thanks to the fantastic effort from the 8 under 19’s in our side that we were in the game at all. These guys were showing our older players the way! We decided to focus on two basic things, laying 10 tackles and 10 blocks per quarter and the goals would come. Our motto was to earn some respect in the second half.
For most of the second half we were really good and I cannot fault any player for the amount of effort they put out, we were a different team!
Our midfield started to work harder, our defence was much better and our forwards started to grow in confidence as more supply came their way – Reddish capitalising with 3 goals and Bretty D, somewhat channelling Patty Dangerfield, went to full forward with a very saw leg and booted 2 goals from outside 40m line
The game finished 7.5-47 to 26.15-171. But the second half in isolation was a good indicator that we have made some improvements and given ourselves something to take into next week (6.2-38 to 10.9-69).
