A return trip home to the comforts of Dunshea Oval to host recently promoted Peninsula Old Boys faced us in Round 5. Like last weekend, both teams were winless so the pressure to get one on the board was high.

We made 4 changes and included Jarrod Reid for his first Senior game in 18 months following a knee reconstruction, Rhett Mitchelhill, Harry Hill and Lewis Fotheringham. Rhett and Lewis were playing their first Senior games for 2017. To cap off a day of anticipation it was Club legend Ben Smithwick’s 150th game which affords him life membership.

The boys started OK and for the first time in a long time – and in 2017 – we were able to enter ¼ time in front – albeit by only 3 points. We were unable to put scoreboard pressure on the opposition however with poor conversion in front of goal hurting us. This allowed Peninsula to stay in touch and our ever-familiar late second quarter fade out saw Peninsula take an 8 point lead into the main break.

The team was again challenged to step up and face adversity and that they did. Whilst we scored heavily in the third quarter with 6 goals we still gave up too many easy goals to the opposition and this allowed them to stay in touch. Just before ¾ time star recruit Jason Ashby went down with what looked like a serious knee injury which left us all very flat. It appears that it may not be that serious so fingers crossed that is the case. With star defender Luke Crozier off for the entire second half, the players were asked for a special effort to bring the 4 points home. Co-Coach Michael Tarrant and I were not sure what faced us with only a 5 point lead.

To the players credit, they were finally able to break the mental demons of having not won in a long time and exert scoreboard pressure and end up running out comfortable winners by 38 points. The second half performance of kicking 11 goals 6 behinds shows that the team can play good football.

We now look forward to bring that form for a full 4 quarters this coming weekend against Monash University which will be a great challenge for us.
