The crunch games keep lining up as they tend to when you are trying to win enough games to avoid relegation. So it was when we came back after the bye to play 10th placed Peninsula Old Boys down at Peninsula School. Coming off a good win in our last match against Ajax, we wanted to keep momentum up with our second back-to-back win for the season. This can be difficult coming off a bye.
Adding to the tension was that we were required to make 6 changes to the team. We welcomed back Deputy Vice Captain Jarrod Reid, Rhett Mitchelhill, Tim Newton, Zander Adam, Under 19 Danyon Reinbold for his second game and Under 19 Wade Brusnahan for his Senior debut.
The feeling was good at the quarter time huddle on the back of the boys largely meeting our quarter KPI’s. To say that we were bitterly disappointed with the response straight after quarter time is an understatement. Peninsula kicked 2 very quick goals and actually hit the lead in a poor response from our boys. We clawed back the lead and went into half time up by 6 points – 7.6 (48) to 6.6 (42).
We challenged the boys at half time to make the play rather than waiting for Peninsula to set the tone. Peninsula kicked the first goal of the second half to again take the lead however that was the catalyst for the Panthers to take the game completely by the scruff of the neck and kick the next 7 goals to go into ¾ time with a commanding 42 point lead – 14.10 (94) to 7.10 (52).
We ran the game out eventual winners 17.10 (112) to 12.9 (81) in a vital win for our hopes of staying in B Grade by season’s end.
The most pleasing aspect was the performance of our young brigade and the leadership shown by our leadership group.
The challenge is now to win our 3rd game in a row to really put some distance on the other teams around us in the relegation battle.
