With both teams sitting 0-3 going into the match, the scene was set for a physical contest when the Panthers travelled down to Parkdale. Plenty at stake and generally only 1 team comes out a winner.
Training had been very good all week and we were well-prepared. We welcomed back club legend Joel Rice, Lachie Macleod and Will Nichols into the side. There was much anticipation. Parkdale won the toss and kicked with a breeze that was slightly favouring their end but a strong breeze nonetheless. Alas, the difference in the match proved to be the first 8 minutes when Parkdale slammed on 4 unanswered goals to our no score.
From that point on, the shell-shocked Panthers made a game of it. We had runs of 2-3 goals at times but each time we got within 8-10 points, Parkdale was able to go on its own run of 2-3 goals. We never stopped battling to get back in the game but the hurdle was too great to overcome eventually running out the game with a 25 point loss.
The club is building with great wins coming in the Under 19’s, the 3’s and the 2’s had its third win in a row. The final domino to fall in place is the seniors now to respond to challenges put to the group after the game.
On a sombre note, one of the great clubmen in Lochie Hall suffered a devastating leg injury on Saturday in the 2’s. The response from our trainers Lauren, Ash, Eliza and Head Physio Richard Taylor, was nothing short of amazing. It would have been incredibly confronting to all involved – not least Lochie himself. He is in good hands and it gives me great comfort knowing we have people of the calibre of our trainers and physios on hand helping in this situation.
The help from the Parkdale people was also much appreciated and it was returned in kind when one of the Parkdale senior players went down in a sickening accidental head knock in the first quarter. Again, the work from both clubs’ trainers and support staff was outstanding and showed a real community spirit.
We will get around Lochie and support him to the hilt in his recovery which will be a journey.
We now focus on our next challenge and that’s getting a win this week, at home, against Peninsula.
