With the season grinding towards its denouement, we welcomed Mazenod to Dunshea as we also unveiled our wonderful new electronic scoreboard. We had 4 changes to the team from last week and welcomed back Vice Captain Sam Cust from his overseas sojourn, Steve Freemantle after some superb form in the Reserves, debutant Sam Bailey (the 7th debutant for the season) and Jimmy Courtot from a raft of serious knee injuries. Jimmy’s troubles have been well-documented and it was incredibly pleasing to see him back out with the Seniors where he belongs.

The first quarter was a tough affair and we had the better of the play on the back of first gamer, Sam Bailey, giving us first use of the ball but did not convert our opportunities when we had them. We went in down 2.4 (16) to 4.1 (25) despite only going inside 50 eight times. The players continued to fight hard in the second term but again, could not break Mazenod’ s stranglehold and we went in to the long break down 5.7 (37) to 6.5 (41).

The third quarter was played in 2 halves. Mazenod came out firing and had clear ascendancy around the stoppages and with first use of the ball, went out to a 25 point lead. We rallied with some experience injection in the engine room with Marc Lock and Jason Ashby giving us a spark with Captain Cam Jones in the ruck and we wrested back control in the stoppages to go into the last break 16 points adrift.

The game was there for the taking and we exhorted the players to take the game on and give our forwards a chance. We are very good once we get it inside our forward area with our conversion rate being excellent. The players responded and got the ball inside 50 on 15 occasions but we did not take our chances with some wayward conversion – Andrew Sloan aside who went forward and kicked 3 goals.

Mazenod did enough to take its chances and ran out winners, 13.8 (86) to 10.12 (72).

Onto next week where we travel down to Old Brighton to take on the competition leaders in a tough away game.

We look forward to the challenge in no uncertain terms.
