With 2W-0L side St. Bernards visiting the panther den nothing more than a dour challenge was expected.
With 5 changes from last week’s drought breaking side the much vaunted panther depth problems were going to get their first test.
The first 5 minutes were business as usual before a mid-field rotation (Campbell Aitken), team captain (Zac Lisle) and spearhead (Jarrod Reid) almost simultaneously left the field for medical attention.
When things finally settled on the sideline the quarter time siren blew and somehow we had slotted 5 goals to 3 goals. We were on! Despite this kitchen sink of challenges we were prospering.
Down back the backline jostled around a few of the match-ups in the final 10minutes of the first and in doing so were able to quell a few threats that had bobbed up early. First-gamer Harry Truelove took on a big job and was looking promising.
Resuming on the field; Campbell Aitken worked into the game well, Cal Cameron returning from a 5week lay-off was influential and the mids led by Lochie Hall & Tom Chapman were on top.
The goals dried up in the second quarter but the intensity of the game remained up. Thriving amongst it most was Pier Akec who was absolutely everywhere, at the half, stumped for rotations the question was could the side continue the effort?
10 years of watching Carey Reserves footy would have suggested an ‘honourable loss’ was how this would play out BUT there’s something different about the 2017 breed and this wasn’t going to be the case.
The tackle pressure in the third was immense led by Gav Plummer on the wing and half forwards Dan Clarke and Joel Rice appearing dangerous.
Despite St. Bernards edging in front at 3QT, they too looked tired, it was well and truly game on!
The last; saw us grind our way to a 16 point lead with about 7 minutes left – Big contributions were still coming from Karsten Rodenberg, Athol Candlish, Michael Mazzocato, Lewis Fotheringham and Dan Clarke – Anything less than a win from here would have been shattering – We got the wobbles a little bit late and allowed 2 goals through but also saw some desperate acts like Tagan Carter-Taylor’s match saving tackle on the wing.
When the siren blew the result was the correct one [OC 80 – StB 77], there were hugs all round. Being the one-side we played against last year, it was one of the few genuine opportunities to measure our improvement and the measuring stick said we’d improved by 201points since July 2016 [Last time we met StB 232 OC 34], it was truly one of those panther wins that belonged on the top shelf!
Well done to ALL involved!
