Having broken a long losing streak and then taken down the high flying snowdogs, the reserves were now taking on a serious challenger (Parkdale) at their stomping ground.

Arriving at the ground in sunshine, it was evident the wind was favouring one end… We luckily won the toss and kicked to that end, giving us an opportunity to get out of the blocks quickly.

We managed to kick 4 goals to nil in the first quarter and considered the match square at Quarter time, knowing we’d have to do everything right in the second quarter to keep them at bay.

In the second we played what would ultimately be our best quarter for the match and were able to score 2 goals into the stiff breeze, while restricting the opposition to 1 goal.  The midfield was functioning well under the guidance of Tom Chapman, as stand in captain and Lewis Fotheringham had his hands on every tap-out. James King resting forward had also been able to create two goals.

The third quarter got off to the worst start possible with a club favourite (Lochie Hall) succumbing to a horrific sporting accident. The match was stalled for 5-10minutes while an ambulance was summoned.  (Lochie suffered a dislocation of the ankle, significant ligament damage and a spiral fracture of the lower leg, which will require surgery).

The side (including myself as coach in retrospect), were a bit shell-shocked by the very graphic injury and to a large extent played like it.  We were unable to put the game beyond doubt in the 3rd quarter, which gave Parkdale a glimmer of hope with the rain starting to come down.

Harbouring a 33 point lead at the final break, the last quarter was scrappy and Parkdale continued to edge closer. Nick Richardson and Jack Quartermain showed their defensive value all day, continually cleaning up the incoming ball.

Closing within 9points with 2minutes to play – The side was happy to hear the siren and had held out Parkdale to record victory [54 – 45].  As coach I was very pleased with the side’s resilience, we now sit 3W & 1L in fourth position and face Peninsula at home this week.
