On 14/08/2014 [950 days ago] the Old Carey Reserves belted out the song after yet another win.
Little did they know it at the time but it would be 22/04/2017 before it happened again!
A couple of years in the high class Premier Grade comp, a revolving door of personnel change and plenty of injuries turned our reserves into cannon-fodder.
But on Saturday we put an end to the unenviable streak by enjoying a hefty win!
The scene for what happened could not have been a better setting…
Star full-forward Jarrod Reid crashed to the ground at Uni Oval in mid-2015 rupturing an ACL.
With the prospect of 18 months out of football, he selflessly turned his attention to coaching.
Thrown a proverbial kitchen sink of challenges in just putting a team on the park, it was apt that today be his return game.
After enduring a 0-18 season where he was nothing but professional and positive, it was truly special that he got to share the song with the very boys he encouraged to keep coming back through the most challenging of times. Jarrod’s return was a great success (four Goals) and we are certain he’ll return to “2pm football” very soon.
The other footballing nicety was having Lach McQueen-Miscamble (Life Member) back from the States long enough to join brother Henry for a one-off game. Lach wound the clock back, in quite the masterclass and maybe spurred Henry on, as he was also amongst our best.
The game was heavily affected by winds and the Carey side played the conditions better. AJAX were inaccurate and only troubled the scorer with points until just before Orange Time (3QT).
With the match sown up early in the last, Old Carey rallied even more late, stretching the difference to 50 points at siren time.
Other great contributors were Nick Richardson, Campbell Aitken, Lochie Hall, Mitch Nixon & Rhett Mitchellhill. That said; it was hard to fault anyone’s contribution on such a special day.
The boys have resolved to make winning a habit in 2017 and our next challenge (being St Bernards) will go a long way to demonstrating this.
