After a five week block which had seen us fall back into the pack of contenders we were looking for the sign of a heartbeat today.
We’ve packaged these next 5 games up at ‘the premiership quarter’ of our season. Important… so as, we do not leave the last few games to become elimination finals.
We had a healthier line-up this week & jumped out of the gates with plenty of possession.
The radar was really off though and we came into the first break with 1 goal 9 behinds. Fortunately for us we held AJAX goalless. The back six and in particular Harry Truelove, Henry Mcqueen-Miscamble and Michael Mazzocato were instrumental in this.
AJAX were flooding back well and making our forward line a busy place to get the business done.
We kept repositioning the side to try and invent an avenue to goal without getting the formula right.
Early in the game Ed Aujard, Zander Adam & Will Mitchell had plenty of it. We hit the main break with just an 8point margin.
We’d given lowly teams a sniff in other games, so it was an anxious position to be in, despite feeling we had a clear ascendancy.
After the half, the game opened up into an end to end affair and the goals flowed a little more. Steve Fremantle kicked us a telling goal amongst 5 for the quarter.
Cal Cameron was getting off the chain up forward, the resting ruckmen we providing some good contests up front and we launched into the final term feeling like we could run away with it. 30points the gap. [65-35]
We started the last strongly with the first goal and thought it was in our keeping. To the credit of AJAX they buckled down and probably had the better of us, as our bench whittled down to none and our run started to fail us. All were pleased when the final siren rang. A bit of an ugly win, but a win nonetheless. [84-61].
A break this week before we head Mt Martha way to take on Peninsula. We sit 6W5L with a slight grip on 4th spot. A mere game separates us from 7th.
