For the second week in a row we were met with miserable conditions with constant drizzle and even fog descending over Dunshea Oval towards the end of our Round 9 Match v Uni Blacks. Blacks were the form side in the competition leading into the round having won five of their last six matches, so we knew we were up for a battle. The season thus far has thrown up many challenges for us - the group has embraced those and we always want to come into the game with supreme effort being a given.

The first quarter was a dour affair with the conditions making it difficult for players to get a clean handle on the ball. Our attack at the contest was pleasing, but we just could not convert our chances and we went in at quarter-time down 3.3 (31) to 0.2 (2). The quarter was overshadowed by what looked like a serious leg injury to our ruckman Ben Coull early on, forcing some significant shuffling of the deck chairs to cover his absence.

Our Captain, Cam Jones, moved into the ruck and was huge for us rucking all day and pushing forward to score a goal as well in the second quarter. We played good hard footy to outscore Blacks and went in at half time 2.3 (15) to 4.7 (31).

Our tackle pressure continued all day, showing us that the intent is there and this cannot be faulted. We just continue to fall down in crucial parts of the game which doesn’t enable us to get the ball in enough to give us opportunities to score. This was evident in the third quarter and we went in to the final break down 3.4 (22) to 7.11 (53).

The fourth quarter was much the same as the third, and eventually Uni Blacks ran out winners 10.19 (59) to 4.5 (29). The players continued to crack in all day and we laid 108 tackles, which is an incredible effort for a young side.

The news on Ben Coull is better than it looked like it could have been, so fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for ‘Coully’.

We go to the bye now with the players having a well-deserved break. We’ll train hard on Tuesday on the things we need to do to get better, and then the players will freshen up ahead of the second half of the season where a number of players will return from injury.

Good luck to Sam Cust and Andrew Sloan who are in the frame to represent the Big V in the upcoming State match versus the SAAFL.
