Last Saturday brought to an end the middle three-week block of games punctuated with bye rounds in between. The Panthers trekked to Melbourne University to take on fourth placed Uni Blacks. Unfortunately the state of the ground does not match the picturesque surrounds of the University and we were greeted with a terrible bog of a playing surface. Nonetheless, both teams had to play on it.

The first quarter was pretty even for the most part as we had the use of a breeze but could not capitalise on the scoreboard. We were able to stifle Blacks’ use of the ball however, which resulted in a dour affair given the conditions as well. Blacks got on top towards the end of the quarter and went into the break leading 4.2 (26) to 2.3 (15).  Blacks wasted no time using the breeze in the second quarter and established a match winning break at half-time leading 9.5 (59) to 3.4 (22) – our goal courtesy of a thumping kick into a strengthening breeze by Andrew Sloan.

Disappointingly, we lost three players to injury early in the second half – partly due to the state of the playing surface. Premier Division footballers should not have to put up with this. Whilst this certainly contributed to our ability to match the opposition, we only conceded one goal for the quarter but could not use the wind to our advantage.

The last quarter was a challenge against a top side and we fell away on the scoreboard but not in endeavour, which is to the boys’ credit. We are in the business of winning and losing but the boys do not give up and this is pleasing. We eventually lost 14.17 (101) to 3.4 (22).

The last bye is upon us. We will recover and re-load for the last three weeks and look forward to two home games in a row, with the elusive second win firmly in our sights.
