Expectations were high as the Panthers travelled to the renowned Snake Pit to take on last season’s premiers St Bernard’s in what was actually a battle of the cellar dwellers with both teams sitting 0-4. Alas, the scenario that played out was a similar tale with the Panthers getting jumped despite kicking with a strong wind – 4.3 (27) to 1.2 (8). The second quarter was probably our worst for the season to date with St Bernard’s completely taking control of the game with the wind to go in at half time leading 13.8 (84) to 2.2 (14).
A few home truths were delivered at half-time by the coaching staff requesting a response. Halfway through the third quarter, with St Bernard’s up by 17 goals to 2, things were looking very grim. The players found a way to compete and responded with the next 6 goals to go in at 3 quarter time down 17.12 (114) to 8.5 (53). We asked for the effort to continue in the last quarter against the breeze and to the boys’ credit, they were able to do so, eventually going down 22.13 (145) to 11.6 (72).
We debuted our 12th player for the season with Angus Archibald coming into the team, and he acquitted himself very well. We lick our wounds, learn from the mistakes, take the positives from the second half and work hard to turn things around against St Kevin’s this weekend in a big day for the club.
