A beautiful day at the home of the Panthers greeted us as we prepared to take on St Bernard’s in a battle of the cellar dwellers. The day was marked by a reunion of the victorious 1986 Premiership side upstairs at the luncheon. This side was critical in forming the modern day Old Carey Grammarians Football Club when there was every possibility the club was about to fold. The courage of this group and its off filed counterparts allows us to be involved today, so it was great to see them come together to celebrate in style.

The seniors were coming off their first win for the year and were expectantly excited about the opportunity to perform well and eye off another victory. St Bernard’s is the reigning premier and better than its ladder position suggests. Our win against SKOB’s also gave St Bernard’s a sniff of avoiding relegation so it came to Bulleen hungry to win.

The match started off with both sides aggressively taking the game on. St Bernard’s took its opportunities early and established a five goal to one lead on the back of midfield dominance. We wrested some of that control back and our leaders inspired us on a run, and we put scoreboard pressure on to eventually take the lead at quarter time 5.3 (33) to 5.0 (30).

The second quarter was a bit of the same though. The Panthers got out to a nine-point lead moving the ball well and evening up around the ground in contested footy at stoppages. Late in the quarter St Bernard’s got on a roll and put three goals on us to go into the long break 11 points up, 9.4 (58) to 7.5 (47).

The third quarter was disappointing for us all at the club as we went back into our shells. St Bernard’s controlled the stoppages and its supply eventually took its toll and they piled on nine goals to our three to go into the last quarter with a match defining 18.9 (117) to 10.9 (69) lead.

We put it on the players at three-quarter time to get something out of the game and, pleasingly, they matched St Bernard’s in the last quarter to eventually go down 21.13 (139) to 13.13 (91).

In summary we matched our opponent for three quarters and fell away badly for one. This was a marked improvement on the last time we played them, so there is certainly incremental improvement the group has shown.

We will keep challenging the group to lift it’s performance each week and get the improvement across the board which we are definitely seeing.
