Whilst the scoreboard doesn’t reflect the outcome, we took a step forward on Saturday in our outing against a very good Old Xaverians side. Blooding our 11th debutant, Jack Harris, we were very keen to put on a good show – especially for our ‘Rolls Royce’ Steve Freemantle, who was celebrating his 100th game. Xavs jumped us in the early part of the game against a strong breeze and went into quarter-time with a 2 goal lead.
We settled a bit and kept peppering the forward part of our ground where second gamer Mitch Nixon was providing a good target for us. We went into half-time 26 points down and only one scoring shot in arrears. This showed us that we were taking a step forward. Our back six were defiant all game and stood tall against a tidal wave of opposition possession coming in.
The second half told a similar tale where we were caught using the ball wastefully and could not give our forwards enough chances. Those we did have we didn’t make the most of. Three-quarter time saw us 6 goals in arrears. A similar story to the last few weeks was on the bench where we were down to one rotation early in the last quarter due to injury (Jack Harris – shoulder & Patty Cremean – back) and managing the workload of Luke Crozier who was cramping. Gallant under pressure, we eventually were overwhelmed by 10 goals, despite a very good last 10 minutes into the breeze.
The back six rotation of Andrew Sloan, Luke Crozier, Harry Hill, Rhett Mitchellhill, Jules Rowe, Joel Rice, Steve Freemantle, Tom Chapman and Morgan Evans must be mentioned as they stood extremely tall against an avalanche of possession coming in.
