Saturday saw our first day when conditions were less than ideal as we trekked out to Harry Trott Oval to take on Collegians. There was an air of silent expectation as the playing group was keen to make a statement and sensed an opportunity with some key players returning for this game. 24 hours of consistent rain made the ground (a renowned quagmire in the wet) heavy and the scene was set for us with the undermanned 2’s displaying great courage in taking the game up to Collegians. If we could display the same commitment we were in with a real show.

The first quarter started well with Ben Smithwick causing havoc up front and we led for only the third time this year in the early part of the game. Collegians rallied late in the quarter against a stiff breeze to lead by 10 points – 4.5 (29) to 3.1 (19).

The second quarter will go down as one of our bravest efforts into the wind, and we were only outscored by four points with Jules Rowe everywhere and second gamer Cal Cameron scoring his first goal for the club up forward after spending his debut match in defence last week.

We could not convert early in the third quarter with the wind despite having plenty of the ball, and we went in at three-quarter time down 11.13 (79) to 10.4 (64).

The players were valiant in the last term but just could not hang on and Collegians ultimately prevailed 13.18 (96) to 10.5 (65). Tagan Carter-Taylor was superb down back along with Luke Crozier repelling thrust after thrust.

Whilst it was a much improved effort, the players were disappointed that they didn’t seize an opportunity and this augurs well for the group that they are not satisfied with honourable losses.  The players continue to front up and are training hard to improve where we need to. For all that, it was another step forward and I am confident that we will keep progressing and the results will take care of themselves.
