The second last round of the long season saw Collegians venture to the magnificent Dunshea Oval to take on the Panthers in a game that we viewed as a ‘final’ for us and a winnable game. Collegians had fallen away in recent weeks and was on the potential cusp of relegation along with us if results went a certain way this round. That’s the beauty of VAFA footy with games mattering generally up to at least the penultimate round in most grades.

The build-up was great and we were excited to welcome back two of our Senior players and stars of the club in Julian Rowe and Joel Rice.  To say the day only just got worse from there would be an understatement. Injuries to two of our most important players in the first 10 minutes of the game had us on the back foot from the get-go. Collegians were kicking with a strong breeze and took full advantage going into quarter time with almost a match-ending 7.3 (45) to 1.1 (7) lead.

We were not able to take advantage of the wind in the second quarter and Collegians pretty much ended the contest going into the long break 10.9 (69) to 3.6 (24).

We challenged the boys to keep giving their all. Despite the win/loss ratio of 1-16 to this point, the boys had never turned their toes up in any game. We came out and really gave it a shot in the third quarter kicking into the breeze, and for the most part had outscored Collegians three goals to two. Another game-ending injury to one of our players broke our resistance.  Collegians waltzed away with the game and eventually ran out very comfortable winners 23.20 (158) to 7.9 (51).

Injuries played their part but this was a game that, for the first time this season, the boys did not respond well to the challenge and adversity.  It’s all part of our journey. The beauty about footy is that we get an opportunity to turn it around for one last time this season when we venture to De La Salle in a game that means potentially not much to them as they cannot make finals and they cannot be relegated.

However, mark my words – it means everything to us.
