Old Melburnians are a top-four side, but arriving at a muddy Sportscover Arena we felt that if we pressured and tackled ferociously we might just cause an upset. So it was that Big Will Guiney marked strongly 20 metres out and converted giving us first blood 10 minutes into a tight first quarter. It wasn’t until just before quarter-time that OM’s took the lead.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern with OM’s picking up a couple of late goals to take a 28-point lead into half-time. Our boys matched them for possession and consistently applied pressure all over the field. With a little more polish with ball in hand we would have gone to the long break with a big winning chance.
Goals to Spencer Cambridge and Nick Morris in the third quarter didn’t quite match the four goals our opponents added. The margin at three quarter-time was 43 points. OM would have been looking at a big percentage boost, but they didn’t get it. All our boys put in a really gutsy last quarter, not only holding OM to 2.7 but taking it forward to add 1.2 themselves.
There were many positives to come out of this game. Matty Pallozzi built on his return to form last week with a terrific four-quarter effort in the midfield where Jack Harris was also prominent. Timmy Smith showed his class in defence.
If we can keep this group together and build on their intensity at the contest, we will certainly pick up that elusive win.
