It is not very often that a 3rds team gets to play on a beautiful oval such as Victoria Park (the traditional home of the Collingwood Football Club) but on this 20+ degree day, this is what we were met with. The team have been working on two main themes this season:
- Start well
- Play to our structure
Unfortunately these points seemed not to go to plan in the first half. We only managed one point kicking into the breeze in the first quarter to Fitzroy’s 3/4/22 and a broken collarbone to Ryan Shinton seemed to set the scene for the half. The second quarter was much of the same. Fitzroy opened us up on the big ground and booted another four goals to our one, and we went into half-time down by 40 points.
We wanted a big effort in the second half and we wanted to play the way we had in our win the previous week. Although the third quarter looked negative on the scoreboard, we actually had a lot of the ball through the midfield, we were just not getting the reward going forward, kicking into the breeze. To be fair, the Fitzroy defenders were brilliant and basically negated all of our forward entry’s, we only managed a further one point this quarter but were happy with the effort.
The last quarter was pretty even and had we played that way the entire match, we would have given Fitzroy a serious run to the line. We booted 2.2 to their 2.8 and were really happy with the way we finished the game off with some tired legs. Stuart Wilson was amazing, kicking goal of the year so far and finishing with 3 goals. Our back six, which comprised a mix of very experienced and very inexperienced players, fought very admirably all day with Ben Elzarka leading them well. The team have a BYE next week and will reset for a home game against Monash in 2 weeks.
