Beaten but not defeated!
After a bye, the Old Carey 3s were ready to throw everything they had at Monash Blues to try and get their season back on track. The first quarter was a really tough battle, although Monash got a jump. Carey wasted opportunities going forward, turning the ball over several times but steadied and kicked two late goals to be within 15 points at quarter-time (2.3 – 15 to 4.6 – 30)
The second quarter was very even, the midfield led by the De Leijer brothers, Mitch Hexter and the ever-improving Billy Croxford in the ruck got the ball moving and we were able to keep the deficit at 20 points before half-time, despite Monash kicking with the breeze (4.5 – 29 to 7.7-49)
A rev-up at half-time had us coming out pumped up and ready to push for a strong quarter, and a chance to take the lead going into the final term. We had the breeze and we could tell it was dropping and would not have a huge bearing on the game in the last quarter. Old Carey got within eight points and we were on a roll, but fitness got the better of us and Monash banged home two late goals to keep us 20 points down (7.8-50 to 10.10-70)
The last quarter showed that fitness was going to get the better of Old Carey. The backline was very strong despite being under constant threat, and Monash ran out 45-point winners in the end.
