Bakers 150 and a Bakers Dozen
With a very new look team, we ran out with 13 debutants for this match, not ideal against the top side. We really wanted to make it a day for Matt Baker and his family to remember for his 150th game and life membership, and so we turned out on the famous Dunshea Oval
The first quarter was not great; Old Carey did not manage to register a score as the De La midfield ran all over us. The backline were very resilient but lacked height. Tim Rule’s efforts were inspiring on players two-feet taller than him and we managed to keep De La to 30 points despite the onslaught (0.0-0 to 4.6 – 30)
The second quarter we set a task to get on the scoreboard. That we did with a crafty goal by the coach and two easy misses, but the team was starting to gel a lot better and were at least in the contest with Simon Lenders stepping up around the half forward line. Unfortunately we could not hold back the De La forward pressure as they piled on seven more goals (1.2 – 8 to 11.7-73)
At half time it was clear that we wanted to give Bakes everything we could and the effort in the third quarter was definitely there. The game was becoming a bit fiery and the injury toll started to add up for Carey.
De La’s midfield were too strong after Billy Croxford went down with an injury to the stomach, but despite his injury he went forward and kicked a sensational goal yet De La managed to put on nine more and they were very accurate too (2.3-15 to 20.11-131)
The last quarter was tough. Old Carey had only 15 players on the ground and we flooded the back line to keep scores somewhat in check. The boys did a great job in adversity and the final quarter finished with De La scoring six goals to our one.
