The first 8 weeks had been a huge learning experience for the core group of the two's players, suffering heavy defeats on the scoreboard but taking small wins and positives from each game. Our starts the last couple of weeks had been our strength, as we were able to remain competitive for at least the first half. Unfortunately against the Blacks we conceded five easy first quarter goals and were immediately on the back foot.
The group was challenged at quarter time to respond, and the following three terms the best footy we have played all season. From quarter-time onwards, we matched the Blacks for the rest of the day, even keeping them to a single goal for the second half.
Every player contributed to this performance, which was even more promising. The tenacity and improvement of our backline, with Lewis Nixon, Mazz, Paddy Arundel, Marcus Cushen and Tim Smith as the key posts, has been fantastic and has kept us in most games. Similarly, our midfield fought much harder and Matty Pallozzi, Jeremy Cator, Athol Candlish and Harry Moore proved that we can match it against some of the best in the competition.
Our forward line has struggled to kick competitive scores all year, but with a settled line-up of Rooster Morris, Pier Akec, Will Guiney and others to come back in, we look a lot more dangerous and will improve even further in the second half of the year.
Special mention to Harry Moore for being an absolute competitive beast all season so far, and dragging teammates along with him. That second-half performance by Harry and the rest of the team proves that when we apply ourselves, we can not only be competitive but can take it up to opposition teams and make them wary of what we can produce.
The bye has come at a good time, and we look forward to the next batch of three matches as we continue to strive for our first victory.
