With six of our best players from the week before unavailable through either promotion to the seniors or injuries sustained during the week, it was a very different line-up that took on De La Salle. The reserves group have struggled against DLS in the past, and with a couple of late ‘outs’ for us on the morning of the game, we were up against it early.
Despite the end result, I want to commend each and every reserves player (up to 49 players used for the season now), on their effort, enthusiasm and resolve to keep fighting out each game. Our results have not been kind to us on the scoreboard, but we’re sticking together and we will get reward soon enough.
Unfortunately we could not quell the DLS on-ball brigade, and their forwards looked dangerous all day. When we took the ball forward, we did in the most part play the way we wanted to, we were just outclassed and out-skilled on the day. Not for the first time, we ended the game with no bench.
Positives to come out of the day were the return from injury of Zander Adam, Marcus Cushen and Lewis Nixon. We also welcomed two more debutants, Tom Cornelius and Sam Comley, who both contributed well on the day.
Best players were Cush and Jeremy off half-back, who were put there to do a job and performed very well. The two ‘H’s’, Harry Moore and Henry McQueen, were fantastic leaders all day and kept the mood of the group and intensity high. Athol and Gordie both played their best games of the season so far, and will be looking to continue that form in the coming weeks.
This week we take on Collegians, and we will have a much stronger team in as we welcome back a few guys from injuries.
