So much has happened since our grand final performance in August, players leaving, players arriving. As they say in the classics “nothing stays the same!”
We hit the track in November last year and it is fair to say we were slow to start. Even in February we sometimes seemed to have more coaches than players!
But a change in the color of the leaves must turn a young women’s attention to tackle bags and mouthgards because the numbers swelled and the vibe on the training track became palpable. We really did have an excellent March, fitness, skills and lots of bonding.
Big thanks to Brad and Em for our sensational pre-season training and skills program and to Fi and Kiara for getting everyone registered and kitted out. And how good are those shorts!
Our first game did not provide the fairy tale. Ajax were a little too polished and took advantage of their scoring opportunities. We were unlucky in front of goal thoroughly deserving a major or two. Ajax had a couple of slippery midfielders who consistently drove the ball forward keeping our backs under extreme pressure.
Thirteen ladies donned the Panthers Guernsey for the first time. And they acquitted themselves with absolute distinction.
The team spirt was amazing, everyone enjoyed playing with each other and the team spirit was demonstrated by relentless gang tackles, accountability, endeavor, hard running and lots of support for each other. We definitely never gave up.
A few (only) individual comments;
Good hands from Little & Bonnie
Courage from Hannah, Morgie, Emma, Caitlin and Maddie J
Serious speed from Ayesha
Awesome ruck work from Ness and helpers including Gev
Great voice work from Em
Serious team work from the backline
Second and third efforts from Georgia and Sophie
Cracking tackles from Mon and Bronte
Nicky was busy as our runner. Thanks also to our trainer Amity, Pete in goals, Gev’s dad the super boundary and for Clare’s outstanding work as timekeeper who somehow saved us going down another goal!
