On a wet miserable Saturday we played I was very excited to take on St Bernards, as they are always a true indication of whether you have improved from previous seasons!

The first quarter was a real arm wrestle as you would expect both sides fully committed.

We fortunately were able to make the most of our opportunities down forward we finished the quarter ahead which was very pleasing.

The second quarter was the same as the first, lots of pressure. General play for most of the quarter was scrappy, predictable football with conditions not helping. We knew Bernies pride themselves on finishing quarters well and in the last five minutes they were getting on top of us withouthurting us on the scoreboard.

The focus at half time was to stick to our structures with our main focus being tackle pressure, even the stoppage tally and keep the intensity high!

It was a quarter of two halves in the third quarter, Bernies started well and kicked two goals clear and it looked  like they were getting a bit of a run on! To the boys credit and I think to Bernies surprise, we finished the quarter full of run.  With the wind building and favouring Bernies, we mananged to come in at the end of the quarter with the score being even!

It all came down to the last quarter and our main focus was to switch play and hopefully expose there fitness and prove to ourselves that all our pre-season work would pay off.

I was so proud of the boys in the last quarter as they moved the ball, making  the right decision on when to switch wide and when to use the corridor.

We totally out played Bernies in the last quarter keeping them scoreless which doesn’t happen too often.

It was very rewarding to see what we are  trying to execute at training can translate to game day.

I am well aware that we had three VFL affiliated players that were also outstanding on the day!

Our challenge as a side, is that we have raised the bar and no matter who is in the team we all know what is  expected!!!
