Sunday Football at Carey
Coming up against a team that were unbeaten, who have taken down both Scotch & De La (who have both beat us by 20 goals this season) we could have had a very ordinary day, especially after our match had been moved to a Sunday forcing another 11 changes to our side.
We went into the game with 10 players in our side with less than 10 games of experience for Old Carey and 6 returning Panther Legends who I am sure, did not expect to be playing much football in 2017!!!
However, the team really worked hard all day, we wanted to show respect to our club and all the people who came to watch us on the day, it was also a tremendous show of solidarity having both Okie & Bear (coaches of the 1s and 2s) running water for us.
AJAX had the wind in the first quarter and although we dominated the ruck, their midfield got on top booting 5-5 to our 1-1 by quarter time.
In the second and third quarters it was much of the same, unfortunately, but we have to give credit to our boys, they worked very hard and just couldn’t get the reward on the scoreboard.
Second quarter AJAX kicked 3-7 to our 1-1 and in the third, 5-2 to our 0-3. Last quarter we had a chat as a team and wanted to give the Old Carey spectators a glimpse into our passion for the club and just wanted to boot a few goals! Show AJAX as well that we were never going to give up or stop trying no matter what the scoreboard looked like. There were a few minor scuffles around the ground and a lot of Old Carey boys running off with match ending niggles so largely, it was our younger players on the park for the last quarter. We lead the quarter until late and ran out with a little respect. 3-3 to AJAX’s 5-4.
The game ended 5-8-38 to 18-18-126 BUT we actually saw this as a much better effort than the previous 3 weeks and we can take a lot of learnings into next week against Fitzroy.
