Saturday saw fellow-relegated opponent St Bernard’s come to Dunshea Oval to take on the Panthers. This was going to be another test for us to see where we are at as, along with Old Scotch, St Bernard’s is expected to be one of the sides fighting it out for promotion back into A Grade.
We were well prepared and focussed to get our first win for the year. The 2’s had just had a magnificent 3 point victory completing a 201 point turnaround from when they last played each other, so we were buoyed to say the least. We had 2 changes to the side with Henry McQueen-Miscamble earning his spot after some great form in the 2’s and Luke Crozier coming back into the side.
The opening quarter was an arm wrestle as both teams threw themselves into the contested ball battle. St Bernard’s kicked a late goal to take a 7 point lead into the first break. We were happy with our intent and asked the boys what was next – how would we react to an acceptable first quarter.
We unfortunately lost Harry Hill to a knee in the back which had us down a rotation early in the game. This is becoming a trend which is frustrating however, we will not use that as an easy out for the team. We have to dig deep as a unit to overcome adversity. Again, it was 2 late goals from St Bernard’s that had us on the back foot for the third week in a row. We must be better at locking down when momentum swings against us late in quarters.
The boys were challenged again at half time and again responded. The good part of that is that we know the players have it in them to play good, consistent footy. The frustrating part is that it is not in the early part of the game. For the 3rd game in a row, we outscored the opposition through some fantastic contested footy and ball movement. We threw the magnets around making wholesale changes. Very pleasingly, the boys responded well to a man and we kicked 6.7 – 4.5 in the second half.
Well done again to the 2’s, the Under 19’s and the Women’s Team on recording great wins.
We go away, review the game and prepare to take on Parkdale at Parkdale next week. Always a tough assignment. We will do everything we can to record our first win for the season.
