Fresh off a win in Round 5 against Peninsula, Co-Coach Michael Tarrant and I firmly challenged the team to back it up against an opponent fairly and squarely in the mix for a finals position at their home patch.
4 changes saw the inclusion of Tagan Carter-Taylor for his first game in 2017, as well as Tom Chapman, Brodie Easton and Zander Adam.
These games are so important in a season that is so well balanced and even apart from perhaps Old Brighton and Old Scotch.
The match started off as an arm-wrestle indicative of the evenness of these 2 sides. Monash Blues had just beaten St Bernard's at the Snakepit so were confident of a good showing for their supporters. Quarter time had the Blues ahead by a point after kicking against a stiff breeze.
Our boys responded well against the breeze and had a 10 point lead late in the second quarter but again a late lapse saw us concede 2 goals and again we went in at half time behind - this time by only 5 points.
The boys best quarter for the year followed in terms of unrelenting pressure and we went in ahead by 13 points at 3/4 time. We knew Monash would come out firing kicking with the breeze in the last quarter so we challenged the boys for a supreme effort.
They did all that and more and withheld a late challenge by Monash to hold on for a 6 point win. Michael and I were very proud of the boys' effort all day.
2 in a row for the first time in 2 years so the next challenge is to make it 3 in a row.
Next week at home against undefeated Old Brighton is the biggest task yet.
We cannot wait.
