All games are crucial in Premier B Grade as the competition resembles the AFL with its even nature. Apart from perhaps Old Brighton, Old Scotch and St Bernard’s, the rest of the competition is fighting for both relegation and finals.
We ventured to Mazenod to take on a team very much in that mix so it was vitally important that we played accordingly. To say the response early was disappointing is an understatement. For probably the 8th time in 9 games, we gave the opposition a significant lead that proved too big to haul in. With the evenness of the competition, gifting an early 3-4 goal lead is football suicide. This was again the case on Saturday. We went in at quarter time down 16 points after being down 22 points at one stage.
Again the boys responded and we started to wrest control of the game back from Mazenod. We went into the long break down 14 points which could have been closer had a line ball goal-umpiring decision gone our way. Our responses have been good all year when challenged. It was put squarely on the boys at half time to do that again and lift even further.
Mazenod kicked the first 2 goals of the quarter to go to a 26 point lead and it was looking ominous. The boys lifted on the back of our leaders and responded with the next 4 goals to bring the game back to level pegging. Unfortunately, as has been the case all year, just when we get back in it, we concede late goals and Mazenod maintained its 14 point lead at ¾ time.
The last quarter showcased some terrific footy from both sides and our boys tried valiantly to bridge the gap which we did emphatically. Twice we levelled the scores late in the quarter and had shots to actually take the lead. We just couldn’t capitalise when it mattered and Mazenod ran out 6 point winners.
It’s been a tough first half of the year. We must gather ourselves collectively and, importantly, stick together to respond in the manner which will allow us to firstly keep being competitive and secondly to start winning games. We will not rest until that is achieved.
