Season 2017 was upon us as we hosted Old Scotch in round one on a hot and blustery day at Carey Sports Complex on the beautiful Dunshea Oval. Much was made of our ability to retain our list and recruit several stars either back to Carey or to the club for the first time. The VAFA community had us as one of the favourites going into the season which is always a frightful scenario for any coach trying to keep a lid on expectations!

Co-Coach Michael Tarrant and I were happy with the pre-season the boys had done and we were hoping for a competitive start to the season against another side expected to finish amongst the top echelon of the Premier B-Grade Division.

The first quarter proved to be exactly that with both sides attacking the contest with verve and Old Scotch held a 7 point lead at the first break. Unfortunately, after kicking the first goal for the season for us, we lost skipper Cam Jones and Brodie Easton in the same contest for the balance of the match halfway through the first quarter.

The first half of the second quarter was still a tight, contested affair. The game was blown open in the last half of the quarter with Old Scotch piling on 3 goals to none to go into the half-time break 31 points ahead. It was our inability to arrest the momentum shift, despite challenging the boys before the game that this would happen, which disappointed Michael and I the most.

The third quarter scoreboard does not tell the tale of the match. The boys lifted considerably and had five scoring shots to none with Old Scotch not taking the ball forward for half the quarter. Unfortunately we did not score a goal in that time despite having many gettable shots. At this level, we need to take our opportunities when presented and we therefore could not put scoreboard pressure on the opposition.

The boys played out the game in the last quarter with each side scoring two goals before the weather set in. That they played the game out still attacking the contest was pleasing. Old Scotch ran outeventual winners 15.15 105 to 7.15 57. New recruit Jason Ashby was superb in his debut for the club and Luke Crozier was a stalwart in defence all day also playing under duress with a badly corked thigh.

We will re-group and look forward to having the opportunity to put out a better performance in Round two when we visit Ajax.
