Clearly the Panther Reserves have taken to playing in the close ones on the ‘shea. Again we saluted by the narrowest of margins, with the ball down our end when it counted most.
The game started out like any other, we had most of the control and were playing the slippery conditions a little better. Our increasingly reliable defensive unit repelled attacks time and time again. Limiting Mazenod to a solitary point in the first quarter whilst … made to earn them we got 2 goals for ourselves [2.3.15 – 0.1.1]. The second played almost a carbon copy of the first Brodie Easton and Jez Cator were leading a reshuffled midfield after some changes and we were spoilt for choice with talls. At the half it was [4.4.28 – 0.2.2].
Our talk was all about sticking at the task to get the reward BUT we went outside in some subtly drier conditions and didn’t match our talk. We at times looked a bit deer in headlights and Mazenod’s launch off their half back was too good for us. We allowed them countless hit ups. It must be noted that we have a young group, many of which were playing junior grades inside of 3years ago, so getting a 4 quarter effort is always a task BUT at orange time we expected a response to a sub-par performance. The only highlight of the previous stanza was a long captains goal from Jez.
Sadly; what we had given Mazenod was a sniff. In sport; a sniff is all it takes. For the first 20minutes of the quarter we were run all over. Mazenod hitting the front and then some. With 5 minutes remaining, the equation was kick two goals or there goes the season!
Finally a centre clearance, via a Ben Coull tap and some clean play swept the ball our way and ultimately stole us a goal. The match was alive BUT the flood had begun.
For the final 2 minutes there were 18 Mazenod players in our fwd sector and no obvious way through. Our backs were holding structure well and when (with 9seconds left) Mazenod dumped a kick out of the danger area, we had the numbers to loop a handball to hero of the moment Tim Newton who pumped it long with less than 6 seconds remaining. The ball disappeared into a mix of bodies about 4 meters out. Suddenly the umpires whistle rang out… [Another hero of the moment] Cal Cameron our season leading goalkicker, had juggled an improbable mark in the square. Before there was time for a high 5 the siren rang loud. 5 points short with a kick to come… Cal pops it through for a 1 point victory. Victory from the jaws of defeat. FINAL SCORE: 7.5.47 ~ 7.4.46
The win keeps our season alive BUT we have to hold off a white-hot Monash side for 2more weeks.
