Sometimes you just have to sit back and watch a well-oiled machine and acknowledge that it was too good and polished for your team. That was the case on Saturday as we journeyed a few hundred metres down the road to take on Old Trinity in the local derby.
We had a few changes to our team which is the VAFA way for all clubs as we welcomed back Tagan Carter-Taylor, Ben Coull and Mitch Nixon from injury, and Matt Pallozzi was given his chance to impress again in the Seniors.
A cold, wet and squally day greeted us as we went into battle. We won the first centre clearance and after 15 seconds, our skipper Cam Jones was having a shot for goal. Unfortunately kicking on this day would be difficult and CJ missed a tough shot. It was all OT’s from there as they dominated play for the rest of the quarter and led 4.6 (30) to 1.2 (8) at the break.
The Panthers are a team that gives it all and will not relent under intense pressure, which is a pleasing trait. The boys battled hard against a very fit and even team and went into the long break 9.10 (64) to 3.3 (21) down. Our leaders up forward were fighting hard and were inspiring us all day.
The second half was much the same as the first with OT’s speed, run and carry too much for our inexperienced team. OT eventually ran out winners 16.22 (118) to 6.5 (41). Our leaders CJ, Ben Smithwick, Joel Rice, Sam Cust, Jacob Murphy and Matt Pallozzi were terrific all day and our defence led by Andrew Sloan and Matt Parker stood up under intense pressure throughout the contest.
The boys can hold their heads up high knowing they gave it their all and we look forward to fronting up to face Uni Blacks next week for our chance at redemption.
