The reserves team for 2016 will look very different to the previous years, with an influx of new players and graduating under 19’s from last season. Round 1’s team saw 5 of the 2015 under-19 premiership team, along with a handful of first-time Panthers and returning players. The early efforts were superb, with effort and intensity high. Leaders Harry Moore and Henry were everywhere, cleaning up in defence and delivering to a dangerous forward line.
We were right in the game until late in the second quarter, where unfortunately we switched off and Trinity were able to able to pile on a series of quick goals. The open space on Dunshea Oval probably suited the Trinity team slightly better, as they were able to create one-on-one’s inside 50 with a couple of strong forwards.
After half-time the boys responded well to a slight change in the way we moved the ball, and were able to sneak a few goals back, with Spencer Cambridge proving a handful up forward with strong leads and accurate goal-kicking.
Unfortunately we just ran out of legs in the second half, with a number of injuries meaning we were without a rotation for the last 15 minutes of the game. We also handed over a few easy goals through basic errors and turnovers, which made the margin blow out a bit. To their credit though, Trinity put us away on the scoreboard and will be a strong contender in the reserves competition this season.
All in all, a lot to work on for the group but also some very good signs if we stick to our structures and game-plan for 4 quarters. Strong performances from Harry Hill, Marcus Cushen, Henry, Robbie O’Hern and the RIcho brothers. Spence was fantastic down forward, kicking 4 goals and continuing his strong form from 2015.
