Great courage in the face of adversity
Round 7 news
Great courage being shown in the face of adversity….
It was another week of bad losses for the senior teams, although the Unders showed great fight, despite multiply injuries losing a tight battle against Caulfield. We hosted De La (seniors, 2nds and 3rds) and again in the seniors showed glimpses of what we will be like once we find our level and get a settled line up.
De la romped out to a seven-goal lead at quarter-time and we seemed destined for a flogging. The boys regrouped and came out smoking, kicking six goals in succession and seemingly having the game back in control. Sadly we couldn’t sustain that tempo and allowed de La to regain the ascendancy and run out very comfortable winners.
We received welcome encouragement from the De La faithful, who by their own admission had been in a similar situation early last season. Losing a large number of quality players at the end of 2013, De La gave many of their younger boys a taste of senior football in 2014 and hung in to stay in Premier A. They are benefiting from that now plus the retention of their players and great spirit sees them a genuine Premier A grade contender again. It can turn around very quickly.
I admire the boy’s spirit, being winless and under the pump is a real test of character and, despite the huge injury list - currently 24 - the boys are showing great courage and spirit.
We are due to get back a string of injured players over the next couple of weeks and combined with the Queen’s Birthday bye weekend I’m sure we will be more competitive in games than we currently are.
Praise must go to the coaches and support staff as well. Imagine their frustration and hurt, having put in huge pre-season hours and expectations. You have to love this picture of last Thursday night as the boys give their approval to the Pull-apart Pork Rolls kindly arranged by Michael Tarrant, c/o his brother-in-law Peter.
Matt Baker reaches his 150………………just
All praise to Dave Pocock our great 3rds coach, as he rallied the boys to ensure we had a full list available to allow Matt Baker to play his 150th game and be honoured with Life membership at Old Carey. Matt did his back early on in the game and only just got to the end.
He has been a wonderful player and clubman and we are all thrilled Matt will now be remembered deservedly as a life member of the club. Here is his famous mark and his last appearance being honoured on to the ground.
