Round 14 news

Bleak weather, bleak football but Unders stand tall …

Bet you have been wondering what happened to the weekly update, no web news or Schillers lately.

Well blame me - I have spent the last five weeks in Italy, on a recruiting drive. Well sort of. It was perfect weather to get around Italy and see what talent it has to offer!!

Sorry, but I’m back now so no more excuses, although maybe I should have gone earlier as the senior’s win over SKOB’s was, from all report, a beauty - well deserved and reward for perseverance and commitment.  The holiday may have cost me a truck load but maybe staying here would have cost more as I believe John Hands’ credit card copped a battering over the bar at the Harp after the SKOB’s win.

Back to reality, cold weather and a tough back-end of the season.  Speaking with the coaches, we have played 42 players in the seniors so far and given 16 boys their first experience at Senior football.  I know the results don’t reflect progress but in reality we are coaching and preparing for season 2017 and beyond, that is preparing boys to make the transition to Seniors and allow us to find our level and be competitive.

That’s the right strategy, but it means pain for now, especially for our Seconds who have endured a very difficult season. The club feels for this group and knows 2016 can’t finish quickly enough.  Regardless, with Jarrod at the helm the Seconds will continue to show spirit and see the season out.  The Unders have suffered from the travel bug and a couple of long-term injuries, and despite being promoted to a higher grade this season they remain competitive and got the win over Old Trinity last weekend.

The committee is active and we meet next week to set in place our early 2017 plans. The recruiting subcommittee met this week and will report back.  Yes, we are in pain and it is a terrible season on-field, but players, coaches, support staff and committee remain united and upbeat.  We just need to see out 2016.
